Where to Go in 2027: Six Rising Destinations, and the Trips They Actually Suit

Where to go in 2027? Compare six rising destinations by trip style, season, transport and the complications to check before booking.

A destination can climb a travel ranking and still be the wrong place for your holiday. A beach island reached by road and ferry asks something different of you than a city with a railway station in its centre. The interesting question about 2027's rising destinations is what kind of trip their newfound attention might help you discover.

Two recently released reports offer a starting point. Expedia's Unpack '27 highlights Hyogo, Busan, Holbox and Perugia among its destinations gaining search interest. Skyscanner's UK list includes Malmö and Trapani. These six places are our editorial selection for contrasting travel experiences, not a combined popularity league table.

They cover an especially useful range: a Japanese prefecture that can extend an existing Kansai trip, a Korean coastal city, an Italian hill town, a Mexican island, a Sicilian port and a Scandinavian city with an international airport across the border. Their differences matter more than their positions in a report.

First, read the trend correctly

Expedia compares flight and accommodation searches from 1 September 2025 to 27 July 2026 with the corresponding previous period. Its reported increases for these four destinations are Hyogo 95%, Busan 50%, Holbox 45% and Perugia 35%. These are Expedia-platform signals. They do not establish worldwide Google demand, completed bookings or visitor arrivals.

Skyscanner's UK edition reports year-on-year increases of 103% for Malmö and 95% for Trapani. Its methodology compares return-flight searches made from 1 January to 17 June 2026, for travel during 2026, with the same search period in 2025. The report is looking ahead to 2027 using earlier behaviour. It has not measured a completed 2027 season.

Neither dataset tells you whether your departure airport has a convenient route, whether a family room is available, or whether the experience you want operates in your month. Nor does growth prove that a place is undiscovered. Use the reports to widen a shortlist, then set the ranking aside.

Hyogo: give Kansai room to breathe

Hyogo is a prefecture, not a single town. Japan's national tourism organization identifies Kobe, Himeji and its hot-spring destinations as distinct reasons to visit. This makes it useful for someone already considering Osaka or Kyoto who wants to build a less repetitive itinerary.

Himeji offers the castle and adjoining gardens; Kobe provides a port-city counterpoint. Kinosaki Onsen, farther north, is a different proposition again: a town where the accommodation and bathing experience can become the purpose of an overnight stay. These should not be squeezed together simply because they share a prefectural name.

For a first plan, choose either a southern city-and-castle extension or a deliberate hot-spring overnight. A traveller interested in architecture and urban food stops might prefer the former. Someone seeking a slower stay, and comfortable learning bathing etiquette, has a stronger reason to choose the latter.

Spring and autumn are sensible periods to investigate for walking, but blossom season brings its own demand; JNTO explicitly notes crowds at Himeji during sakura. Winter can suit an onsen-focused trip if cold-weather logistics are acceptable. Don't buy a blossom trip around a photograph and assume the trees will match it on your dates.

Check the exact station and final transfer before choosing accommodation. For a ryokan, establish whether dinner is included, when you must arrive, and whether bathing arrangements meet your party's needs. A low room rate is a poor comparison if another rate includes meals you intended to buy anyway. The strongest reason to come is the contrast within Hyogo; the principal mistake is treating that variety as permission to rush across it.

Busan: choose your neighbourhood before your hotel

Busan combines a coastal setting with a large urban destination. It suits travellers who want Korean city life with beach walks and a different rhythm from a Seoul-only holiday. It is less convincing as an add-on if the itinerary leaves just enough time to arrive, sleep and leave.

The Korea Tourism Organization's Busan guide describes airport access by light rail and metro, alongside coastal experiences such as Haedong Yonggungsa Temple and the Blue Line Park train. Pick one of those coastal outings and leave it room in the day. A network map cannot show whether every attraction is convenient from your hotel; build a sample day before choosing a district.

Start with the experience that matters most: coastal time, market-and-food exploration, or connections for onward travel. Then compare the journey from each candidate hotel to those activities. A sea-facing room may be worth paying for if you will use it; it makes less sense if your plan sends you across the city every morning.

Consider April–May or October for a sightseeing-led first visit, subject to the official seasonal information and your tolerance for variable conditions. Those are editorial starting windows, not a promise of beach weather. If swimming is essential, investigate the beach's operating arrangements and seasonal water conditions separately.

Allow space for an unhurried coastal day instead of connecting every photographed viewpoint into one route. Check festival dates before comparing hotels: an event can be a reason to travel and a reason the rooms you want are unavailable. The appeal here is a city holiday with room for the coast. Its complication is that choosing the wrong base can consume the time you hoped to spend outside.

Perugia: a city break for people who like staying put

Perugia's historic centre has a clear focus around Piazza IV Novembre. The regional tourism organization also documents the city's pedestrian aqueduct route and the Minimetrò connection. Together they suggest a compact cultural stay, with an important qualification: compact on a map need not mean effortless with luggage.

This is a good candidate for readers who enjoy architecture, museums and evenings in one place rather than a different hotel each night. Plan enough time for the city before treating it as a base for the whole region. A sequence of distant day trips can turn the accommodation into a place you barely experience.

April–May and September–October are reasonable windows to investigate for a walking-led trip. Check event calendars and temperatures rather than assuming a shoulder-season label guarantees quiet streets. If a festival is the attraction, choose its confirmed dates first and accept that accommodation comparison must follow that decision.

Inspect the property's actual approach: stairs, vehicle access, the final walk and late-arrival arrangements. If arriving by train, check the connection from the railway station to your accommodation rather than searching for a hotel merely described as central. If flying, verify the operating days from your own airport before choosing the length of the break.

Perugia's difference is the chance to build a holiday around a hill city's daily rhythm without committing to a large metropolitan itinerary. Its limitation is equally useful: it cannot offer every countryside experience within a casual walk. Decide whether you want a city break or a regional touring holiday before paying for either.

Holbox: the transfer is part of the decision

Holbox is the option that most needs a logistics check before falling in love with the photograph. The Mexican Caribbean tourism organization describes access via Chiquilá, reached by road from Cancún, followed by a ferry. That makes the island a different choice from a hotel reached directly from an airport.

It may suit someone happy to devote time to a single island stay. It is harder to justify for a very short break with awkward international arrivals. Work backwards from the last acceptable transfer and establish what happens if the incoming flight is late. Sometimes a mainland overnight is the more comfortable plan, even though it adds a line to the budget.

The region's seasonal climate guide distinguishes drier spring months from wetter periods. For a first beach-led shortlist, investigate roughly December–April, then check the conditions and prices for your actual week. This is not a weather guarantee. A wildlife-led visit may call for a different season, verified with an authorized operator.

Ask accommodation providers about the final arrival route, air conditioning, room access and cancellation conditions. Price the road transfer, ferry, island transfer and any overnight stop alongside the room. Avoid combining the cheapest international flight with an island hotel before confirming that the two actually connect.

Bioluminescence and wildlife encounters should remain possibilities, not promises sold by the headline. Weather and natural conditions can alter the experience. Choose Holbox because the island stay itself appeals, not because every image-dependent activity must occur on demand. Its distinction is precisely the slower island setting; its drawback is the extra coordination needed to reach and leave it.

Trapani: choose a port city with an island option

Sicily's official tourism site places Trapani beside the sea, Mount Erice, the salt pans and the Egadi Islands. This is a useful combination for travellers who want a city base with options rather than an isolated resort.

The sensible plan is to decide which option matters most. For the town and food, keep the schedule loose. For an island outing, inspect ferry availability and the return before booking anything around it. For Erice, check the cable-car timetable and any operating restrictions. A map full of nearby attractions cannot guarantee a workable day.

May–June and September–early October are starting windows to compare for a mixed sightseeing and coastal trip. They are recommendations to investigate, not measured claims of cheaper rooms or empty beaches. Travelling farther outside summer may suit urban exploration but weakens a plan whose success depends on frequent boat trips and long beach days.

Check whether accommodation serves the old-town experience or the transfer pattern you actually need. Add airport transport and port access to the price comparison. A particularly cheap arrival can become less attractive if it forces an extra hotel night or a costly late transfer.

Trapani is different because it lets you choose between staying in town and extending onto the water. Keep at least one land-based day available if the sea excursion is disrupted. Readers who would be disappointed without an island crossing should build flexibility into the stay rather than betting the holiday on one departure.

Malmö: an alternative base, not a claim of cheap Scandinavia

Visit Sweden identifies Copenhagen Airport as a practical gateway, linked to Malmö by train over the Öresund crossing. That makes a two-country city break conceivable without adding another flight. It does not make every cross-border itinerary automatically convenient.

For the city itself, Visit Sweden suggests Lilla Torg, Malmö Konsthall and Moderna Museet. A square-and-gallery day provides a concrete reason to stay, with an indoor option if the weather changes. Malmö also offers access to the surrounding region. Before assuming it is simply a cheaper place to sleep while visiting Copenhagen, compare the whole plan. Repeated rail journeys, return times and the value of spending evenings near your hotel can change that calculation.

Late May–June or September are useful periods to investigate for a first walking-led visit. The former gives more scope for long outdoor days; the latter asks more attention to daylight and weather. Winter can still suit a purposeful urban stay, but it should be chosen for the activities available then, not as a discounted version of a summer photograph.

Choose accommodation around the days you intend to spend in Malmö itself. If Copenhagen dominates the plan, compare staying there directly. Check airport and cross-border train arrangements through the official transport resources, including ticket purchase before boarding where required.

The interesting opportunity is a broader view of the region, not a competition to tick two countries. A relaxed split stay may be more rewarding than repeated commuting. Malmö earns its place on this shortlist by opening a different itinerary shape; it does not come with a verified promise of savings.

Turn the shortlist into a bookable holiday

Choose the experience first. Hyogo and Perugia are strong candidates for a cultural extension or slower city stay. Busan and Malmö require thought about neighbourhood and regional connections. Holbox puts arrival coordination near the top of the list. Trapani rewards a plan that can survive a cancelled sea excursion.

Then compare two realistic versions of the same trip. Hold the number of nights, room requirements and luggage constant. Include transfers and the last usable departure, not just a flight's advertised fare. For a family, check the precise room occupancy and meal arrangements; two adults and two children cannot be priced reliably from a double-room headline rate.

Finally, make a short dependency list: the one attraction, transfer or seasonal experience that would change the booking decision if unavailable. Verify that item before making the rest non-refundable. Confirm passport and entry requirements with the relevant government for your nationality; platform trend reports do not answer those questions.

The best use of a 2027 destination forecast is to find a trip you would not otherwise have considered. Once it has done that, your own calendar, transport and priorities should take over.
